EAST AURORA, NY: PRESS RELEASE
SEEKS TO TRIM THE “MISLEADING SLOGANS” FROM CLARK CROOK’S CAMPAIGN TO DISSOLVE EAST AURORA
Today, long-time resident Randy West, a member of the Village Planning Commission, announces his candidacy for Trustee of the Village of East Aurora. West is a an engineer who seeks to bring his experience and expertise to the serious issues facing the Village, including the joint municipal facility with the Town, the future of the Grey Street Plaza, consolidation of services between the Town and Village DPWs, and, of greatest importance, the Mayor’s campaign to dissolve the Village.
West lives with his wife, Lisa, and their three children on Buffalo Road in a house that once served as housing for employees of the Knox Estate. West has degrees in Geography and Civil Engineering from U.B. He is a licensed Civil Engineer, with experience in contract negotiation and administering complex projects. Public service has been a part of his life. As a young man, he served in the Peace Corps. He’s been involved with numerous citizen’s and political campaigns within the Village. He was a board member of a community swimming club for five years. For the past 8 years, he has been a member of the Village Planning Commission.
As a member of the Village Planning Commission, West has supported a policy of controlled growth. He endorsed the skating rink on Riley, the relocation of the Goodyear store on Grey Street, and the new CVS drug store at Main and Olean. However, he opposes the planned expansion of the Mobil Station at Oakwood and Hamburg, stating “There are a sufficient number of convenience stores within the Village that we didn’t have to rezone residential land and demolish houses to allow this one to expand. Especially at this intersection.”
West appreciates village life and cites it as one of the things that drew him and his wife here in 1993. “I love being part of this community. And the opportunity for any resident to step up and participate in village government as an independent candidate is one of the many privileges of being a Village resident,” he says. “My involvement in Village politics over the last 17 years has had some successes and some failures. But the system works, and the proof is in the gorgeous Village we live in. The only thing I’m afraid of is that the Mayor will market his campaign to dissolve the Village using misleading slogans. Calling it “One East Aurora” is not honest. If the Village is dissolved, there will be no East Aurora. All that would remain would be the Town of Aurora. The public must understand that.”
West believes that dissolution of our village government could have numerous negative consequences. “It would not only damage the quality of life that we enjoy here, it would also eliminate the one level of government that actually works.”
West believes that his love of village life, his expertise as an engineer, and his experience on the Village Planning Commission will enable him to make a difference for the citizens of the Village, now and for the future.
